Art in the Open 2016
Friday May 13 - Sunday May 15, 2016

Art in the Open (AiO) is a citywide event that celebrates artists, their inspirations for creating art, and their relationships with Philadelphia's urban environment. AiO artist Michael Kolster returns to the Schuylkill River
Friday May 24 - Friday June 14, 2013

AiO artist Michael Kolster has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to continue his study of America’s rivers using the historic wet glass-plate process, the ambrotype. Box camera and portable darkroom in tow, Michael will be continuing the work he began as an AiO 2012 artist, along the Schuylkill River Banks from May 24 – June 14, 2013.
Kolster’s feels that rivers embody the ever-shifting nature of our own attachments to place and period. Using a time-sensitive process of ambrotypes–developing the images on site–and documenting the rivers edge gives shape and meaning to that flow of time.
Michael is Professor of Photography at Bowdoin College, Brunswick Maine. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and has lived in Rochester, New York; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Boston, Massachusetts; and San Francisco, California. He holds a BA in American Studies from Williams College, an MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art, and a certificate from the full-time Documentary Photography program at the International Center of Photography in New York City.
