AiO Family Day: Independence Seaport Museum
Saturday May 17, 2014 - 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Scrimshaw is a form of storytelling. Sailors would carve elaborate pictures on ivory and stone while on the high seas. Families are invited to create their own Scrimshaw using soap, skewers, and paint! Artist and designer Greg Moore, whose exhibition Heirloom will be on view at the Philadelphia Art Alliance from May 22 through August 17, is inspired to create his elegant ceramic tableware by local agriculture and garden crops. In particular, Moore is interested in the earth, from which we harvest not only the plants we eat, but clay, a material historically used to make the plates, bowls, cups, and other objects used in preparing, serving, and eating food.
